Milky Blossom

For today's post, I'll be discussing the books I have read over these summer holidays. Its the best time to do plenty of reading because university is out until first semester at the beginning of March, so I have more time to do the things I have wanted to do all year but never quite had the time to do! Reading (apart from textbooks and academic papers for research) always escapes me during the semester, which I despise but I must live with in order to pass all my courses! I'll soon be returning back to the city after being at home for two and a half months (probably closer to three) so it will be back to the grinding stone again soon!

1. James Dean: The Mutant King by David Dalton - ♛♛♛♛♛
I love James Dean, so this was an interesting read for me and I learned of things I never knew before. It was really broad and detailed so I - in a way - felt more connected to James Dean as a human being.

2. The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides - ♛♛♛♛♛
I was thoroughly in love with this novel. Will definitely be reading it again, the writing style is just so dreamy and whimsical, that it creates an atmosphere and I actually feel as though I am living the life of the characters.

3. You'll be Sorry When I'm Dead by Marieke Hardy - ♛♛♛♛♛
Marieke Hardy just has such an amusingly wonderful way of writing, this book is so nostalgic in the way she reflects on the events and popular culture of the time periods she describes in different chapters/sections. I was either cringing or laughing at different parts of the autobiography, it was just really entertaining.

4. Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography by Lesley-Ann Jones - ♛♛♛♛♛
I am also a humongous fan of Freddie Mercury, he is one of my greatest inspirations in life, so I thought I would give this book a whirl. It was really good, I was taken from the opening passage and looking through the sectioned photographic pages was wonderful, too.

5. Mrs Dalloway by Virgina Woolf - ♛♛♛♛♛
This was my first Virgina Woolf reading, so I was intrigued to see what I thought of her writing style. I was really drawn in, I loved this piece of literature and will definitely be re-reading it again.

6. Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence - ♛♛♛♕♕ Oh my, this must have been extremely racy and pretty much pornographic in it's day, I'd never read a novel with the c-word in it, so I was a little uncomfortable, but it didn't affect me too much. I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure that I'll be reading this one again for a while. My first introduction to D. H. Lawrence was Sons and Lovers as a school reading and I didn't enjoy that novel at all, this one engaged me more.

7. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - ♛♛♛♛♛
I LOVE THIS NOVEL. Please take the time to read it if you are into darker novels with twists and turns at every corner. A classic gothic novel, I was sucked in immediately. I felt like I was reading from a soap opera script as each new revelation unfolded, I can't say anything more but I love this novel!

8. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen - ♛♛♛♛♛
I enjoyed this piece of literature from the lovely Miss Austen, will read again.

9. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert - ♛♛♛♛♕
This was an interesting read, I felt confused at times and a bit scattered, but it was quite a tragic read and I am likely to read it again.

10. Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore - ♛♛♛♕♕
I read the abridged version of this novel, so I'm not sure how much was left out, but I got the general idea. I was a little uninspired by it in areas, but I got more into it towards the end. May read it again, I am not sure.

11. Portrait of a Lady by Henry James - ♕♕♕♕♕ (inapplicable)
I am only partially through reading this novel, but from what I have read, it is wonderful!

12. Persuasion by Jane Austen - ♛♛♛♛♛ Quite liked this, it was a really good insight into the time period it was written in, regarding class and relationships.

13. Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery - ♛♛♛♛♛
Oh how I love thee Anne Shirley! I wish you were my bosom-buddy and my kindred spirit, I can identify with you so much. She has such a romantic and whimsical way of seeing things, she would have been an amazing person to befriend in real life has she been a non-fictionalised person. Lovely novel, just lovely and I wish there were a Gilbert in my life! It should not have taken me so long to get around to reading this novel!

14. I'm With the Band by Pamela des Barres - ♛♛♛♛♕
Normally, I am not really interested in things like this, but I really loved this autobiography into the insight of a groupie's life during the 60's - 70's period. I really wanted to be a part of that period and hear + speak to all the people she knew/met. I quite felt like I could imagine all the music, atmosphere and fashion of the time.

15. Orlando by Virgina Woolf - ♛♛♛♛♛
Oh my gosh, this was a really interesting and fast-paced piece of literature. I loved it so. I loved how descriptive it was and how the descriptions created such vivid imaginations of the events unfolding in my mind. It was truly a wonderful read.

Here is another playlist for you all to enjoy while you day-dream, drink cups of tea, study or eat cake. It is full of pretty instrumental pieces that feel magical. ♡
